Bhopal, India Poison Gas Leak Disaster, 1984 During the night of December 2-3, 1984, a storage tank containing methyl isocyanate (MIC) at the Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked gas into the densely populated city of Bhopal, India. Killing an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 people, the Bhopal Gas Leak was one of the worst industrial accidents in history. Cutting Costs Union Carbide India, Ltd. built a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India in the late 1970s in an effort to produce pesticides locally to help increase production on local farms. However, sales of pesticide didnt materialize in the numbers hoped for and the plant was soon losing money. In 1979, the factory began to produce large amounts of the highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC), because it was a cheaper way to make the pesticide carbaryl. To also cut costs, training and maintenance in the factory were drastically cut back. Workers in the factory complained about the dangerous conditions and warned of possible disasters, but management did not take any action. The Storage Tank Heats Up On the night of December 2-3, 1984, something began to go wrong in storage tank E610, which contained 40 tons of MIC. Water leaked into the tank which caused the MIC to heat up. Some sources say that water leaked into the tank during routine cleaning of a pipe but that the safety valves inside the pipe were faulty. The Union Carbide company claims that a saboteur placed the water inside the tank, although there has never been proof of this. It is also considered possible that once the tank began to overheat, workers threw water on the tank, not realizing they were adding to the problem. The Deadly Gas Leak By 12:15 a.m. on the morning of December 3, 1984, MIC fumes were leaking out of the storage tank. Although there should have been six safety features that would have either prevented the leak or contained it, all six did not work properly that night. It is estimated that 27 tons of MIC gas escaped out of the container and spread across the densely populated city of Bhopal, India, which had a population of approximately 900,000 people. Although a warning siren was turned on, it was quickly turned off again so as to not cause panic. Most residents of Bhopal were sleeping when the gas began to leak. Many woke up only because they heard their children coughing or found themselves choking on the fumes. As people jumped up from their beds, they felt their eyes and throat burning. Some choked on their own bile. Others fell to the ground in contortions of pain. People ran and ran, but they did not know in which direction to go. Families were split up in the confusion. Many people fell to the ground unconscious and were then trampled upon. The Death Toll Estimates of the death toll vary greatly. Most sources say at least 3,000 people died from immediate exposure to the gas, while higher estimates go up to 8,000. In the two decades following the night of the disaster, approximately 20,000 additional people have died from the damage they received from the gas. Another 120,000 people live daily with the effects of the gas, including blindness, extreme shortness of breath, cancers, birth deformities, and early onset of menopause. Chemicals from the pesticide plant and from the leak have infiltrated the water system and the soil near the old factory and thus continue to cause poisoning in the people who live near it. The Man Responsible Just three days after the disaster, the chairman of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson, was arrested. When he was released on bail, he fled the country. Although his whereabouts were unknown for many years, recently he was found living in the Hamptons in New York. Extradition procedures have not started because of political issues. Anderson continues to be wanted in India for culpable homicide for his role in the Bhopal disaster. The Company Says They Are Not to Blame One of the worst parts of this tragedy is actually what has happened in the years following that fateful night in 1984. Although Union Carbide has paid some restitution to the victims, the company claims they are not liable for any damages because they blame a saboteur for the disaster and claim that the factory was in good working order before the gas leak. Around 3150BC ancient Egyptians were one of the first to start using dyes in hair.2 From a plant called â€Å"Henna† they obtained the leaves and mashed them in mildly acidic conditions.3 When the leaves are mashed in these conditions the leaves release a molecule called lawsone.3 This molecule is the organic molecule responsible for the brownish red colour and is the dye acquired from this mixture. For my critical reflection I attended the suicide prevention presentation with keynote speaker Jamie Tworkowski. Prior to attending this event, I wasn’t very excited. I thought that it would be a boring lecture where someone stood up and talked about suicide. I didn’t think it would tell me something I didn’t already know. It began with the discussion of Jamie’s organization called To Write Love on Her Arms and how it started with his desire to help a friend who was struggling with addiction and self harm and share her story. Her story first appeared on myspace and quickly after the page received thousands of comments and responses, Jamie realized that this is an issue that reaches everybody. Today, the organization has flourished into a†¦show more content†¦If you feel as though you can’t find your place in this world, one day you will and if you don’t stay, you will never find out. I think the purpose of this phrase was to show tha t things will only get better and if you don’t like the way things are, you have the power to change that. For instance, if you don’t like your major, change it or if you hate your job, find one that you enjoy. The main goal of this campaign is to tell people that they are not alone with their pain, so they call and make that appointment to get the help that they need. With this goal in mind, I think UConn is doing a good job helping its students get the help that they need. Having the CSD on campus, a walking distance for all students, is an easily accessible resource solely dedicated to helping students who are struggling. By providing therapy, it gives students at least one person that they know they can trust and just talk to about anything they are having difficulty with. They also offer drop in consultations and yoga classes as a way for people to just connect with one another. Contrasting to my initial thoughts, it was completely different from my expectation. D2:- Now if there are four members for restructuring the project, then according to the Belbins theory they can perform the following tasks:- Action oriented roles: - Under this role, the members should act as shaper, implementer and completer or finisher. People oriented roles: - Under this role, the members will perform as team worker, coordinator and resource investigator. Thought oriented roles: - Under this role, the members will perform as specialist, monitors and planners. Evaluating and investigating oriented roles: - Under this role, the members will perform as an investigator or evaluator (Barros, Gal and Kindler, 2012). Be able to assess the work and development needs of individuals Factors involved in planning the monitoring and assessment of work performance:- To plan and monitoring the assessment of work performance the following factors should be considered:- The team leaders and the members deliver the regular job feedbacks. The clear performance expectations should be set. There is a need for linking performance. The appropriate learning and development opportunities should be provided. Top performers should be recognized and rewarding (UKEssays, 2015). Planning and deliver the assessment of the development needs:- To plan and deliver the assessment process there is a need for identifying the need, delivering the training and evaluating the training. Identifying the need:- For different projects, different kinds of professional skills are needed for the team members involving in the respective projects. Hence, it is necessary to identify the need for the professional skills for the team members of different projects to successfully meet the development needs (Wallis, 2012). Delivering the training:- After identifying the professional needs of the team members of various projects, suitable training should be provided to them. The success of the assessment process:- The success of the assessment process depends on the following factors such as:- The goals and assessment purpose must be clearly communicated and well defined. To conduct the assessment, appropriate assessment method should be used. To meet the set objectives the assessment should be monitored and the processes to implementation of plans should be ensured. In achieving the goals of the assessments a realistic and achievable method should be conducted . Besides the process should be clearly communicated and must be understood. To evaluate the performance of the staffs, feedback is important for the success of assessment process. To evaluate study and communicate the findings of the assessments different techniques should be employed. As an integral part of the job design appropriate assessment should be done. The assessment should be done in such a way that it should be free from biases (Wallace and Sheldon, 2014). D3:- If I would be the owner of the organization, then to assess the work and develop the needs of the individuals, I should go for the alternative strategy. That is I can generate a document of feedback sheets for all the employees over the year and will maintain the record.
